چکیده

We give examples of non-amenable ICC groups Γ with the Haagerup property, weakly amenable with constant Λcb(Γ) = 1, for which we show that the associated II1 factors L(Γ) are strongly solid, i.e. the normalizer of any diffuse amenable subalgebra P ⊂ L(Γ) generates an amenable von Neumann algebra. Nevertheless, for these examples of groups Γ, L(Γ) is not isomorphic to any interpolated free group factor L(Ft), for 1 < t ≤ ∞.

Strongly Solid Ii1 Factors with an Exotic Masa

Using an extension of techniques of Ozawa and Popa, we give an example of a non-amenable strongly solid II1 factor M containing an “exotic” maximal abelian subalgebra A: as an A,A-bimodule, L(M) is neither coarse nor discrete. Thus we show that there exist II1 factors with such property but without Cartan subalgebras. It also follows from Voiculescu’s free entropy results that M is not an inter...

Structural Results for Free Araki-woods Factors and Their Continuous Cores

We show that for any type III1 free Araki-Woods factor M = Γ(HR, Ut) ′′ associated with an orthogonal representation (Ut) of R on a separable real Hilbert space HR, the continuous core M = M⋊σ R is a semisolid II∞ factor, i.e. for any non-zero finite projection q ∈ M , the II1 factor qMq is semisolid. If the representation (Ut) is moreover assumed to be mixing, then we prove that the core M is ...

Interpolated Free Group Factors

The interpolated free group factors L(Fr) for 1 < r ≤ ∞, (also defined by F. Rădulescu) are given another (but equivalent) definition as well as proofs of their properties with respect to compression by projections and free products. In order to prove the addition formula for free products, algebraic techniques are developed which allow us to show R∗R ∼= L(F2) where R is the hyperfinite II1–fac...

Free Products of Hyperfinite Von Neumann Algebras and Free Dimension

Introduction. Voiculescu’s theory of freeness in noncommutative probability spaces (see [10,11,12,13,14,15], especially the latter for an overview) has made possible the recent surge of results about and related to the free group factors L(Fn) [13,3,7,8,9,4]. One hopes to eventually be able to solve the old isomorphism question, first raised by R.V. Kadison in the 1960’s, of whether L(Fn) ∼= L(...
